3 Key Steps to Scaling Mobile Apps Across Your Business

The introduction of mobile technology, and specifically mobile apps, is at the forefront of an increasing number of organisation's business strategy. With new technology comes news challenges, but in the case of mobile apps for enterprise there are a number of things that can influence how successful it will actually be.

One of these is to ensure that you identify how the enterprise apps can be scaled across your firm should they turn out to be an initial success. Similarly, what issues would you encounter should measures not be in place to encourage the smooth rollout of apps across different departments and teams?

In order for you to prepare for the process of scaling enterprise apps across your organisation, we've put together 3 steps that will help you determine whether you're ready to introduce the new technology yet.

1. Find a leader to sponsor your new technology

You're going to need a leader, or leaders, within your organisation who are prepared to take the new technology from start to finish. In the case of enterprise apps that could mean the leader needs to:
  • Have an understanding of the long and short term value of mobile apps
  • Be invested enough to allocate the required resources (human and financial)
  • Understand both the needs of the end-user and the app creator
It's worthwhile to consider where the leader comes from and who they are. Have they a history of being involved in innovative projects? This would suggest they're familiar with introducing new technology and scaling it across organisations, which is a massive bonus.

2. Build a business case

Finding a leader is important, but having one or two employees on your side isn't enough. You'll need to create a business case which drives appreciation for the new technology across other departments.

This could include detailing what the benefits are for the specific departments and teams (which is generally what they'll be interested in the most).

An example business case should:

1. Outline the app market and its benefits
    • Increased productivity
    • Quick access to information
    • Improved communication
    • Easier to understand and explore products
    • Better decision making
    • Decrease the chance of double-handling information
2. Outline the specific app use cases
    • What you want the app to do
    • Who would use it
    • When would they use it
3. Why is the app use case beneficial to the business? Demonstrate real ROI (return on investment)
    • Fact and figures on industry examples
    • Projected statistics for the impact this will have on the business
    • Ideas for other benefits relating to employees and the business
It's also important, once you've generated interest throughout other departments, to find other advocates in those circles. Ideally you'll be able to use a number of 'leaders' or advocates across a number of teams to scale the enterprise apps more effectively.

3. Using integrations to scale your new tech across the organisation

When integrating new technology, it will depend on the size of your company as to how you'll go about the process. For example, in large enterprises, you'll find that software like Salesforce will integrate with a huge amount of tools, but it's often not very intuitive and struggle to meet your needs exactly.

If you don't integrate existing software with the new technology you'll end up devoting greater human resources to maintaining it and making regular adjustments.

By choosing integrations you'll have up-to-date, relevant data straight from the original source. What's more, you won't have to teach new things to people who are already working with the technology that you're trying to integrate.

What works in the favour of firms today is that more people have similar mobile devices than ever before. This in turn, makes it easier for organisations to scale enterprise apps across departments with decreased disruption.

Who should be measuring and taking responsibility for the performance of enterprise apps?

Businesses are taking greater ownership over their internal strategies relating to mobile apps. This has the consequence of more smaller teams implementing enterprise apps, and thus, managing the process themselves. 

It's not always the case that the professional who creates the enterprise app will also be the user. However, there should be a responsibility of the team who owns the app to monitor it's performance.

This is where the concept of a Mobile Centre of Excellence (MCoE) can be of substantial benefit to an organisation. The whole purpose of the MCoE is to help other people adopt the new solution and learn from previous experiences. Additionally, the MCoE can ensure that the overall performance of the apps across the whole organisation is being measured.

It's usually most beneficial for the centre of excellence to include a variety of individuals from within the organisation:
  • Practitioners who are hands on with the product
  • Sponsors or advocates capable of explaining to others the benefits
  • Others have an interest in the product
Ensure you have a strategy in place to manage your enterprise apps

Creating an enterprise app strategy is one thing, but investing resources into ensuring that the new technology have the best opportunity to show real benefit across the entire organisation is another altogether.
